Commonly asked questions

What is a Moroccan Hammam?

A Moroccan Hammam is a unique sensory experience combining warmth, steam and centuries-old traditions. The hammam is indeed an integral part of Moroccan culture—a communal sanctuary where people go to cleanse themselves, socialize, and relax. Beyond physical cleansing, hammams serve as important social spaces, where people gather to chat, share news, and maintain community bonds. Most Moroccans visit a hammam weekly as part of their regular routine.

The architecture of the hammams is beautiful, featuring domed ceilings and intricate tilework. These rooms are designed to retain heat and create the perfect steamy environment for this ancient wellness ritual.

SAFIR is precisely all that. More specifically, at SAFIR, your hammam journey begins in a warm room (approximately 35°C/95°F) where you’ll acclimate your body and apply Moroccan black soap made from olives and essential oils to your skin. You’ll then move into our hotter steam room (approximately 56°C/133°F) for 5 to 10 minutes, where the heat and humidity open your pores, soften your skin, and allow the essential oils to absorb deeply, promoting improved circulation, stress relief, and natural detoxification.

After the steaming process, one of our skilled attendants (called a “kessala” for women or “kessal” for men) will escort you to a heated table in the center of the hammam. There, they’ll perform a body exfoliation using a traditional rough mitt called a “kessa,” removing dead skin cells and leaving your skin incredibly smooth and renewed.

At SAFIR, we bring you an authentic visit to Morocco from right here in Downtown Moncton, where this traditional experience remains unchanged—a deeply relaxing ritual that combines cleansing, wellness, and social connection.
